Jean Armstrong is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University. Her research interests include digital communications, engineering education and women in engineering. Since 1997 a major focus of her digital communications research has been on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and she has led an OFDM research team since then. Her team was initially based at La Trobe University, but moved with her to Monash in 2004. She has over 100 refereed papers on digital communications, many of which are highly cited. Her team has been awarded three ARC Discovery grants on OFDM topics. (2001-2004: Coding and signal design techniques for reducing signal peaks and interference; 2007-2009: Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OOFDM): a breakthrough for ultra-broadband optical fibre system and infrared wireless personal-area networks; 2010-2012: Multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for optical wireless: a breakthrough solution to gaps in broadband delivery). Her OFDM research has led to a number of patents on OFDM (dating from 1998). Until 2005 the OFDM research of her group was mainly on wireless (RF) applications, but in 2005 Professor Armstrong realized that OFDM could also be used in optical communications. The initial optical OFDM papers were direct extensions of her earlier work on clipping of OFDM signals. The optical OFDM research at Monash University has led to a number of prizes including the $100,000 Peter Doherty Prize for the best commercialization opportunity in Australia, also ANZA Technology Award and ICT Sector Award. The commercialization of optical OFDM at Monash was managed initially by Leonore Ryan and later by David Lyster of the Industry Engagement and Commercialisation Group and led to the venture capital funded company called Ofidium. Jean Armstrong also leads the Monash component of ACoRN (the ARC Communications Research Network). As a pioneer woman engineer and woman engineering academic, Jean Armstrong has both a personal and research interest in women in engineering issues. In 1996 she was honoured with an IEAust Engineering 2000 award for her commitment to encouraging and supporting women engineers. In 2008 in recognition of her role as pioneer women engineer and telecommunications researcher she was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women. As an engineering educator she has been responsible for many innovations across a number of universities. Most recently she designed a new structure for the first year Electrical Systems unit at Monash and led the team which developed and introduced it. The new course makes extensive use of online resources and has been extremely successful. At La Trobe University she restructured the coursework Telecommunications Masters degree and improved the marketing and student support. This resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of students enrolling. During her time at the University of Melbourne she was responsible for many innovations including introducing the first core undergraduate unit on microprocessors and identifying the potential of double degree courses in engineering.
