Course Transfer

The University has formal policies and procedures to ensure a consistent approach to the selection of course transfer applicants across the ten faculties and between course transfer applicants and applicants entering courses via other pathways. This process is managed within the framework of the University internal transfer policy and the procedures made pursuant to that policy.

Eligibility for course transfer

To be eligible for a course transfer, you must meet all of the following:
  • be a current student who will be continuing their program of study (in other words, you have not completed your current degree).
  • complete a minimum of 12 points of study at Monash
  • meet the VCE, IB or equivalent prerequisites for the course to which you wish to transfer. Prerequisites for engineering programs are listed on Course Finder.

Double degrees

Applications for course transfer into engineering double degree programs offered with the faculties of Business and Economics, Law, and Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences should be submitted to the managing (non-engineering) faculty. As engineering does not select for these programs, the partner faculty's selection criteria and application processes apply (see below for course transfer links).

Double-degree students wishing to exit their program and graduate with a single degree

Under the terms of accreditation of single and double engineering degrees with Engineering Australia, if you wish to exit your double-degree program and graduate with a single engineering degree, prior to having completed all the requirements for the double degree, you will have to revert to single engineering degree candidature and complete all core and elective units and the requisite 192 credit points in order to satisfy the academic requirements for completion of that degree.

Criteria for course transfer into engineering managed programs

Selection is part of a competitive process that takes into consideration several factors including the number of places available and the strength of the applicant pool. As these factors may vary from year to year and the level of performance required to be offered a course transfer into an engineering program may also vary. Detailed below is a table of the minimum weighted averages required to be considered for an offer into the relevant program. These averages should be used as a guide only as a higher standard may be required in any year. Students who do not meet the minimum averages will not be considered for admission.

CourseAvg. required for CSP placeAvg. required for international place
Aerospace engineering single and double degrees>= 80.00%>= 78.00%
All other single degrees>= 60.00%>= 58.00%
Double degrees with Arts, Art and Design, Pharmacy and Science>= 60.00%>= 58.00%

Transfer into the Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) also requires students to meet a minimum portfolio requirement and attend an interview. For further information contact the Faculty of Art and Design.

How to apply for programs managed by engineering
  1. Download and complete an Application for course transfer. Complete a separate application for each course you are applying for.
  2. Application for credit transfer if you wish to apply for credit for the units you have already completed at Monash. If you are seeking credit for units you have completed at another institution then you must include a certified copy of the academic results from that institution and a comprehensive syllabus for each of the units.
  3. Submit the application(s) to engineering before the deadline.

Deadlines for submission of applications

Please refer to the closing dates table for submission deadlines. The Faculty of Engineering will not accept late applications.

Mid year applications

In 2009 the Faculty of Engineering will not accept mid year course transfers into the double degrees with art and design, arts and pharmacy or into the Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering and associated double degrees.

Students should check with the Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Law and and the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences to determine if applications for double degrees managed by those faculties will be accepted at mid-year.

Course transfer for Sunway students

Important information for mechatronics students who commenced at midyear at Sunway campus

If you are a mechatronics student who commenced your course at midyear on the Sunway campus please bear in mind that if you are opting to transfer to Clayton campus you will experience sequencing issues with the timetabling of mechatronics units.

Due to this issue, the Faculty of Engineering at Clayton campus does not allow midyear intake to the Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering for any other student cohort.

In these circumstances, transferring from Sunway campus is not advisable, however, if you do opt to transfer to Clayton campus you will need to underload your enrolment for the first semester at Clayton. This underload is required as you will not have the prerequisites to enable you to course progress with a full-time study load. Please note, a full-time study load is 4 units per semester and 8 units per year.

A study underload might add time to the final duration of your course and you might not be able to complete your degree in the standard 4 year time frame. If you do enrol in an extra semester to complete your degree, you will be subject to any increases in tuition fees applicable to that semester.

If you do transfer to Clayton, it is up to you to plan your future enrolment with the engineering course coordinator at the Sunway campus prior to accepting an offer to transfer to the Clayton campus.

Please note: If you are a mechatronics student who commenced in a semester 1 intake at Sunway campus there are no sequencing issues so the above does not apply.

Current scholarship recipients

Students on a scholarship should check with the body administering the scholarship to determine whether the scholarship is transferable if they are offered a place in another program.

Notification of the outcome of your application

Students will be notified of the outcome of their application via email sent to their Monash email account. Applicants applying for semester one transfers will be advised in late December, before the University closes for the year. Mid year applicants will be advised following the release of semester one results in mid July.
