Environmental engineering at Monash

The environmental engineering course at Monash is multidisciplinary, providing the necessary skills to solve, implement and manage engineering activities from a sustainability perspective. You can select units from three streams with core engineering units and principles and choose complementary units from science, geography or arts.

Elective Streams

Water and Land Management:
Geoengineering hazards, Water resources management, Integrated urban water management, Environmental design.
Environmental Process Engineering:
Cleaner production technologies, Sustainable resource processing, Design project.
Transport and the Built Environment:
Green buildings, sustainable transport and environmental design.
Level one offers a broad base of science, mathematics, introductory engineering and environmental units to form the basis of a multidisciplinary engineering education.
Level two increases the engineering content with a mixture of core engineering units and more environmentally directed units. Mathematics continues and environmental policy is introduced to begin to integrate the content gained from other units.
Level three, students choose units from elective streams. They are introduced to more environmentally focused engineering units, along with units that examine environmental impact and management systems.
Level four provides applications for earlier studies by way of substantial engineering design and project work, complemented by advanced and interdisciplinary units from environmental law and economics and further elective units.

Course recognition

This course is fully accredited with Engineers Australia. This means that as a graduate you can practise as an environmental engineer in many parts of the world without needing to re-qualify.

Domestic students

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Australia, or a citizen of New Zealand, your application should be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC). This applies even if you have studied year 12 interstate or overseas, or if you are a mature aged person returning to study. For further information contact VTAC at:

International students

International students currently studying VCE should apply through VTAC. All other international students should apply direct to Monash.

Prerequisites

The prerequisites for entry to the Bachelor of Environmental Engineering are: VCE Year 12, Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 25 in English or 30 in ESL, and a study score of at least 20 in Mathematical Methods, and in one of Chemistry or Physics.
